The game is basically dead down here in New Zealand so I can have it searching 10-20 minutes without finding someone easily. In fact I forgot that I was searching the other day and it reached over an hour. Let's talk about the Escape Map Builder... Posted: 04 Jul 2021 10:26 AM PDT Escape is a mode with some tremendous potential, but let's be honest - once you've played through all the TC-published maps, they get kind of boring, which is why allowing community-made maps was so important. But if we're being honest, then we have to talk about how utterly pointless and restrictive the map builder is. To start off... The Budget This is perhaps the greatest thing kneecapping the Escape map builder right now. The budget is INSANELY restrictive. Come hell or high water, a large chunk (more than a fifth) of your Chapter 1 budget will be immediately consumed by the Start and Safe Room tiles. 211 points to be exact... on a 1000 point budget. It's ~And when you consider that large tiles routinely cost ~350-400 points to add, you end up with a situation where building more open and explorable areas just isn't possible. With a larger budget, players could easily construct vast open spaces that feel more like a true hive and not just a long, fancy corridor. There's absolutely no reason for the budget to be this restrictive, especially since there are a number of TC-published maps that go WAY over the budget that the community has to abide by, which only begs the question what the purpose of the budget is actually FOR. If it's not a limit meant to prevent performance issues (which clearly don't manifest on the aforementioned larger TC-published maps, then why have it to begin with? Next up: The Tiles No doubt the tile sets we have now are far more diverse than the ones the map builder launched with. There's a decent amount of room for creativity here. But there are a number of niche tiles found in TC-published maps that have yet to make their way to the map builder, namely the Medbay and the Fabricator tiles that allow you to purchase weapons with a fixed energy budget as opposed to just looting them from supply rooms and random pickups. This is far less of a grievance than the budget, but still something that should absolutely be added to the map builder. Next: The Enemies and Pickups There are a fair number of enemies that can be found in TC-published maps that are MIA from the map builder. Most of the standard Swarm units are available, but it would be awesome if we could get enemies like Swarmaks, Carriers, and DeeBees (other than Rejects/Stumps). The more variety the better. Lastly... The Rewards I get that TC wants to prevent people from making ridiculous hives that just serve as XP farms (as if people don't already farm maps like The Clock and The Surge), but we really do need to be able to earn SOMETHING for playing custom maps. If you want the community to be more engaged in playing each other's maps, you need to incentivize them to do so. Right now, it's all stick and no carrot. Perhaps give players the chance to submit one map per week for dev review so that it can be made eligible for XP and card rewards. Maybe even just once a month. But it isn't fair for players to receive absolutely NOTHING for playing custom hives, some of which are - quite frankly - more difficult than TC-published maps by orders of magnitude. Closing The Escape Map Builder is a great tool and a much-needed change of pace for a mode that, as an experience built on map tiles, can quickly grow stale if things aren't constantly changed up. But there's a lot of roughness around the edges and a lot of room for improvement. Whether this comes in Operation 8 or Gears 6, I really hope TC takes the time to make improvements. There's no reason to toss this mode aside and forget it exists, rather there's far more reason and room for TC to invest further in the Map Builder and turn it into something REALLY special.
