Unpopular Opinion: If Judgement had Gears 3’s gameplay, medals and multiplayer characters system, it would be regarded as the best Gears to date

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 08:12 PM PDT

I'm ready for the downvotes. All I ask is you hear me out first.

When Judgement's story was first announced, the premise of it that is, I couldn't have been more excited. Because I think I speak for a lot of the community, if not it's entirety, when I say:

    I love Baird.

His story as a spoiled rich kid who was thrust into the war after his parents died on E-Day, only having the training the COG gave him and his genius to work with is a great background, but even without knowing that, his simple set up as a rightly arrogant genius who uses sarcasm and humour constantly to deflect from the constant tragedy he faces is great, and what's particularly special is that despite his efforts to seem the contrary, he really does care. If that wasn't enough, Cole.

Cole is just... positivity at its finest. He oozes charisma, and his constant shouting and upbeat attitude make me, and most of the community, love him overall.

Gears of War has to be commemorated for managing to make two iconic duos within one series. Cole and Baird are perhaps just as beloved as Marcus and Dom, Coles constant optimism contrasting Baird's cynicism brilliantly, and it creates a great dynamic that I couldn't wait to see more of.

Paduk is a great addition. His background and therefore position on the COG, being of the UIR, offers a unique position we hadn't really seen past a few comments from Marcus and such, especially not to Paduks degree. He had some brilliant moments, and although some of his finer ones come out in Gears 5, he was still pretty cool.

If you had to pick the weakest character, it would be Sofia. But that's not exactly an insult in a game with those mentioned above - her background as an Onyx Cadet is interesting, as is her relationship to Paduk and her constant grapple with following Baird and what's right vs her orders and loyalty to the COG. I didn't know which way she was going to go, and that's compelling for me.

Karn as a villain was... fine. He falls down a bit in comparison to Raam and Myrrah, but honestly, Gears 2 had the best story and Skorge wasn't exactly terrifying. He was just the muscle behind the main antagonist. Speaking of which...

Loomis is brilliant. He is the main antagonist of this game, and he is so fun to hate. His unjustifiable downright narcissistic behaviour all in the name of the COG and his loyalty to them do exactly what was intended, in that ironically, it allows us to gain Paduks perspective. And it perfectly contrasts our protagonists perspective, in that Baird will not follow orders at the cost of civilian lives, while Loomis believes in the COG and would sacrifice them in a heartbeat if ordered too. And the fact he'll be remembered as a hero makes it burn all the more. He may be the best villain of the series behind Myrrah.

Now here's where you're opinion of mine will go downhill - the story is the best Gears has told, on par with Gears 2. Cue the downvotes.

First, the structure. I thoroughly enjoyed the testimonial style narrative. It allowed us to gain each characters perspective while also moving the story along in segements in a way that felt natural rather than jarring. Movies and games that try to do this, where they tell the story after it's happened can often fall flat, but Judgement succeeds in leaving what happens somewhat ambiguous while not feeling like it's intentionally dancing around it.

The best part of the story is by far the Baird vs Loomis ideology. I already talked about it with Loomis' character, but such fighting within the COG wasn't seen before Judgement.

The main problem Judgement has is it's continuity errors. There's quite a few, but for example, how in gods name did Baird go from Private to Lieutenant in 8 weeks? But other than such things, which mostly come down to timeline, the story is a compelling one.

The gameplay is the final segment, and by far the worst. The loot boxes, general gameplay and modes in general were horrible. But there was SOME good.

The challenges in the campaign that added to the testimonials were fun, and challenging. I quite enjoyed them on my replay as an extra little thing, and that goes the same for the horde type segments, which were a fun change from the usual. The new enemy types were also cool. This game in terms of gameplay didn't have much to offer, but it's innovations are actually pretty damn good.

Overall, I think that's the real tragedy of Judgement. It had a compelling story, good characters, a great villain, and a decent few innovations to keep it fresh along the way. If they'd just kept with the formula from 3, that in my opinion still has the best system for medals, characters, horde and so on we've had to date, it would've been remembered as perhaps the greatest Gears game yet.

Do me a favour though, seriously. I genuinely want to have this discussion with people. So if you do disagree, and you have the time, please throw you're points in the comments, and I'll be happy to respond. I just don't want the discussion killed before it even got going

So I've been wondering if the Kraken in Gears 5 was one of the three riftworms or was it it's own thing? Does anyone know?

I wish we could play as Swarm in Coop vs AI

Most days I only go on versus to do the versus daily, and it's rough going for the "Win 25 matches as Swarm" medal when Coop vs AI is COG only, and playing quick play and getting Swarm is pure RNG
