So I’ve started playing horde on Gears 5, is there a way of gaining character XP any quicker than just playing on harder difficulties? Has anyone got any tips and tricks?

I found a spelling mistake on Gears 5: This upgrade has been automatically "equppied"

    Damage system

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 01:00 AM PST

Im newer to the gears franchise, so i may be missing something, but is there a perk or something similar that adds power to guns in versus? I could be facing someone , with a gnasher, and they will get 100% in 1 hit, but i get like 78% in 3 or 4 hits. Is this just a luck of the draw type deal? Or how does the damage system work? Also, why does it feel like 98% of people who play not know what team means? Is this more of a lone wolf game?

    Input based Matchmaking?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2019 03:37 AM PST

So I was wondering have or are they thinking of adding input based Matchmaking? I love gears but I hate playing on mouse and keyboard it just doesn't feel right since I've played all the previous ones on controller. I'd just love to be able to plug my controller in and play against others using a controller.

(Serious long-post) Why the Gears community struggles to grow. (discuss)

    Posted: 08 Dec 2019 10:07 AM PST

I've been seeing a lot of posts asking about why the game seems so unpopular. Originally, my answer was just that Gears is inherently a niche game; the style and presentation and intensity just turns off most people - that is, it's very inaccessible.

But that opinion has... Not necessarily changed, but evolved. I want to explain why I think the game, although not dying, is struggling to expand. I was originally going to do a video on this but I'll generate a lot more discussion with a reddit post (hopefully) and I want to hear opinions.

The main thing I'll be looking at is Twitch/Youtube, since these are the 2 primary sources of video game content creation. Mixer's Gears community is very small compared to Twitch.

The twitch viewerbase varies depending on when you look at it. This goes for every game. For gears, on average, you can expect around 5-700 viewers at prime time.

The main reason why, as far as I can tell, is because Gears has very few dedicated hardcore content creators. There are only a few dedicated streamers (Glint, Domez, Shadowz, etc.) And none of them are pro players. They are skilled, don't get me wrong - I personally think Glint is literally the best gow player of all time. But that's different from being a competitor.

Domez is the biggest consistent streamer, and I'm convinced this is largely because he [1] engages with his audience in a very approaching manner. He brings a lot of personality (if you're savvy enough, you can catch Domez dancing on stream. Shit is funny. We need more of that.) ,

and [2] he's only big name you can expect to be doing pro-level gameplay; this would be those hardcore wager matches, challenges and so on. E.g, running a bo3 2v2 on stream with names like Notorious, Tristan, Kryo, etc. (side note, Domez competed in the 2v2 bracket for San Diego this weekend, he got pretty far.)

The few pro players who do stream consistently (such as Tristan) are 'underground' players with small followings. They don't have the same level of exposure. If the biggest names would stream more often - such as Mental, Sumuns, the boy Kenny Bounce, etc - you would see a lot more average viewers. Because when these guys do stream, they bring in a relatively shit-ton of viewers. It makes sense. They're high-profile names and they're absolute demons when it comes to skill.

Demo Bounce did a stream a couple days ago where he explained this problem better than I can, and this was essentially the main reason he gave. The biggest players in the community don't do enough for the game unfortunately.

The most high-profile pro I can think of, who does put out a lot of quality content, is Avexys - and he doesn't do it that much. He uploads wager matches, tournament matches, 1v's and 2v's, and when you see the game played at that level, it does something special that just watching Shadowz body kids in KOTH doesn't.

There's a level of intensity and tension in gameplay like that, that brings a unique experience you can't get from standard streams. Standard streams and such are usually boring because of this - it's not that exciting to just watch someone dominate pub matches over and over.

Heres an example of what I mean about tension and intensity. One of the best gameplay videos I've seen from gears of war, is an old 1v1 in gow4 between Identivez and SuMuns. It's on youtube.

    https://youtu.be/x1l-89RlmHA

Look at that view count! We're watching Goku vs Vegeta! Its like watching 2 supersoldiers battle it out. This video stood out to me because, even for me (I've been playing Gears of War since kung-fu flips and Crab Walking. OG terms for those of you who are newer) this was like watching a side of gears of war I've never seen before. Watching 2 amazing players duke it out head to head using everything the game has to offer.

And we honestly just don't get that anymore. I dont think we ever did. The community would only benefit if we did, though. Kenny Bounce did a stream a while back where he opened a custom lobby and played with viewers, it generated hundreds in the viewer-count.

I guess the point is that, for a game that revolves around it's competitive scene, we

    1. Don't get to see competitive gameplay hardly at all, outside of the events and the weekly PGL/UMG streams.

    2. Don't get to meaningfully interact with the competitive players, through twitch, youtube, or what have you.

    3. Don't even get to know much about our best players. Who here can honestly say that they even know much of anything about all the best players?

    4. We don't seem passionate about the game, even when gears is arguably one of the most passion-based competitive shooters on the planet.

It's like, even the hardcore playerbase doesn't even seem to place much value in the game and what it can bring. There's no surprise that the game seems so damn unapproachable. Gears of War is one of the best multiplayer experiences out there and we just don't even show it off.

The San Diego stream averaged about 17k viewers alone, and when weighted against the standard 700 viewer count Gear normally gets, it makes the contrast seem even starker by comparison. Unfortunately, we won't get anything approximating this again until the next major event - when we could.

A lot of people don't even know that, for instance, gears 5 has a lot of tournaments that happen throughout the week. We just don't see it hardly, either on youtube or twitch. Tristan is the only player I can name who consistently brings this gameplay experience to twitch, and I talk about him a lot because he's one of the only examples of a player who is demonstrates his passion for the game - he just doesn't ring as many bells as the name, say, Explosive does. Imagine how many people would tune in if the gears 5 twitch had several major players all competing in a 2v2 KOTH Gnasher-Pistol tournament.
